TMJ massage is a targeted treatment designed to release tension in the jaw muscles (the temporomandibular joint area). It can help relieve jaw pain, clenching, teeth grinding-related tightness, headaches, neck tension, and facial discomfort.
At Ma Saj, TMJ massage may include massage work on the external jaw muscles, as well as internal (intraoral) techniques where appropriate and with your full consent. Treatment may also involve surrounding areas that contribute to jaw tension, such as the neck, scalp, back, diaphragm, and upper abdomen, to support overall nervous system regulation and breathing patterns.
This is a highly individualised treatment, and your therapist will always check in with you and tailor the session to your comfort and needs on the day.

Yes. TMJ massage can help reduce the muscle tension associated with jaw clenching (bruxism), teeth grinding, and TMJ dysfunction.
Treatment works by releasing tightness in the jaw, face, neck, and surrounding muscles that often become overworked from stress or habitual clenching. This can help relieve symptoms such as jaw pain, facial tension, headaches, and neck discomfort.
At Ma Saj, TMJ massage is tailored to you and may include work on both local jaw muscles and connected areas that contribute to tension patterns in the body.

Yes. TMJ massage can help reduce tension that contributes to headaches, neck pain, and facial tightness.
Jaw tension often doesn’t stay isolated in the jaw, it can radiate into surrounding muscles, including the temples, scalp, neck, and upper back, creating referred pain and ongoing tightness patterns.
By releasing tight jaw and surrounding muscles, TMJ massage can help reduce these symptoms and support overall relaxation and nervous system regulation.
-
The jaw is a common area for holding stress and tension, so some areas may feel tender during a TMJ massage. However, the level of pressure is always guided by your comfort and preference on the day.
Your therapist will work within your comfort zone and can adjust pressure at any time. You’re always in control and can ask for changes during the treatment if anything feels too intense or if you’d prefer a gentler approach.
Throughout your session, your therapist will check in regularly to ensure you feel safe, comfortable, and supported.

The right practitioner depends on what is contributing to your jaw symptoms.
A remedial massage therapist may be helpful when jaw tension is related to muscular tightness, teeth clenching, stress, headaches, neck tension or facial muscle tension. At Ma Saj, our therapists work with the muscles surrounding the jaw, face, head and neck to help release areas of tension that may be contributing to discomfort.
A physiotherapist may be the right choice when you need support with jaw mechanics, movement patterns, joint function or rehabilitation following injury.
A dentist or TMD specialist may be appropriate for dental concerns, significant jaw joint issues, bite-related concerns, jaw locking, or symptoms that suggest a structural issue.
Sometimes a combination of practitioners can provide the best support. The most important step is understanding what is contributing to your symptoms and choosing the right care for your individual needs.

If your primary goal is to claim through your private health insurance, booking a Remedial Massage may be the better option. Yes. Stress and anxiety can contribute to jaw tension, teeth grinding (bruxism) and TMJ symptoms by increasing muscle tension throughout the body.
At Ma Saj, all of our treatments recognise the connection between the mind and body. Alongside targeted treatment of the jaw, face, neck and shoulders, your session may also incorporate slower, more restorative techniques to help calm your nervous system. By addressing both the physical muscle tension and the body's stress response, we aim to create a deeper therapeutic effect and help reduce the cycle of stress-related jaw tension.
While massage can't eliminate the underlying causes of stress or anxiety, many clients find it helps reduce muscle tension, improve jaw comfort and promote a greater sense of relaxation.
-
How often should I have TMJ, jaw tension or facial massage?
The frequency of jaw tension massage depends on what is contributing to your symptoms and how your body responds to treatment.
Some clients notice a sense of release and relief from jaw tension, neck tightness or associated headaches after their first treatment. For others, where jaw tension is connected to ongoing patterns such as clenching, stress, posture or muscular habits, a series of treatments spaced around one to two weeks apart may help settle the tension and create lasting changes.
Once symptoms feel more manageable, some clients choose regular maintenance treatments, such as a monthly appointment, to support ongoing jaw, neck and facial muscle relaxation.

Massage can be a supportive treatment for muscular jaw tension, clenching, facial tightness and stress-related tension patterns. However, there are times when it’s important to seek advice from a healthcare professional first.
We recommend speaking with your doctor, dentist or appropriate healthcare provider before booking jaw-focused massage if you are experiencing:
Recent trauma or injury to the jaw, face or head
Jaw locking or significant difficulty opening or closing your mouth
Sudden, unexplained facial pain
Swelling, signs of infection, or active oral concerns
Neurological symptoms such as changes in sensation, weakness or unusual symptoms
Severe, worsening or changing symptoms
Active oral infections, ulcers or cold sores
Recent oral surgery, dental procedures or significant dental work
A suspected jaw fracture or acute inflammation around the TMJ (temporomandibular joint)
At Ma Saj, our remedial massage therapists take a personalised approach and will always consider your individual symptoms and comfort. If your symptoms suggest that another healthcare professional may be more appropriate, we will encourage you to seek the right support.

This appointment allows your therapist extra time to assess and treat the jaw, neck and surrounding muscles. Treatment also includes the upper back, neck and shoulders, as we know these areas are often closely connected to jaw tension.
If your primary goal is to claim through your private health insurance, booking a Remedial Massage may be the better option. Rae is qualified in both Jaw Tension Relief and Remedial Massage, making her a great choice if you'd like treatment focused on your jaw while also using your remedial massage benefits.
